Some Girls Bite – Chloe Neill

book cover of Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires, book 1) by Chloe Neill

A Chicagoland Vampires Novel

First in a brand new series about a Chicago graduate student’s introduction into a society of vampires.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsuckers’ and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan Lord ‚ the Manor‚ Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred- year-old vampire, he has centuries‚’ worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects her gratitude and servitude. But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war and there will be blood.

Now going off my last couple of reviews, you’d think I had it in for the paranormal/urban fantasy genre. Not so. I think there is an oversaturation of the same ole same ole and I’m over it. Imagine my surprise to pick up this book and not want to put it down. Merit is almost an anti heroine and I LOVE HER!!! I bought this book on a whim and boy am I glad I did.

Ms Neill has a whole new fresh approach to the genre that I for one found oh so very refreshing. These are the sort of vampires I want to read about. The vamp’s are humorous (well the ones that don’t take themselves seriously are lol). They are realistic and Merit struggles to hold onto her own innate beliefs while trying to assimilate into the new vampire culture she has inadvertently fallen into. She is a kick ass kind of girl rather than a sit back and watch it happen spectator.

I loved the pace of the book and the length. It was engaging, entertaining and it flowed from one chapter to the next rather than the jumping around we have seen in other books of this ilk. I went to the hairdressers and you know what, when my hair was done I was like “BUT I HAVEN”T FINISHED MY BOOK YET”. Not to say that my hair takes that long or the book is that short or that I am a speed reader but the last thing I wanted to do was have to stop reading so I could drive home to finish reading. I wanted it ALL NOW. Perhaps one of the stand outs of this book is that sure there was a bit of sexual tension between some of the protagonists however it was a secondary item. If that It was like the music you put on in the background when you want to relax. You know it’s there, you can hear it but it doesn’t detract from what you are doing.

Read Chapter One from Chloe’s website
I’m now off to read the ARC of Friday Night Bites, second in the Chicagoland Vampire series.

Thanks for the recommendation – I will take a look. Have you read Kitty and the Midnight Hour (Carrie Vaughn) or Succubus Blues (Richelle Mead)? Those are the first books in 2 other paranormal/urban fantasy series that I’ve liked.

I like them both, but they are for different moods. If you are looking for a larger amount of romance, the Georgina books are stronger with romance. In that case, you should start with Succubus Blues.

The Kitty books are for-fun and don’t have much to qualify as romance … the point is more about Kitty growing in confidence, I think. Book one is Kitty and the Midnight Hour.

    • I met Richelle last year but I guess I thought she was more YA. I’ll check out the first book in each series and see how it goes.

A book to recommend at the moment is Ascension by SAble Grace. It comes out 26th April. You do have to wade through a bit but it will suck you in
